SMART 5 and Indicator Checklist

The sustainability criteria for Chemical Leasing make an important contribution to the quality assurance of Chemical Leasing applications. They help to define and differentiate the business model from other service models that, for example, do not focus on reducing negative environmental and health impacts. In practice, it has also been shown that the criteria require a sufficient description to allow for a verification of their fulfilment.

Aiming to have such a concrete description, the Chemical Leasing Sustainability Criteria have been specified and made operational by developing sub-criteria and indicators which are available in form of the Indicator Checklist  as well as the Excel-based tool SMART 5*.

To verify the compliance of applications with the sustainability criteria and sub-criteria for Chemical Leasing, quantitative indicators that facilitate easy data collection are helpful. Besides, qualitative indicators are needed to show non-measurable effects.

The goal of the indicators is a standardised review of Chemical Leasing contracts regarding their observance of the sustainability criteria. This helps companies to maintain a high standard of the business model and its applications.

* Both tools are developed by the German Environment Agency together with cooperation partners.

  • SMART 5 intends to motivate companies to implement and comply with sustainability criteria. Companies can highlight the many benefits of Chemical Leasing for the environment, energy efficiency, resource conversation and health. In addition, companies can better document economic aspects such as costs, profits and business connections as well as social aspects such as the qualification of the skilled personnel using the data obtained. As a result, companies also have the opportunity to demonstrate their achievements in terms of sustainability to the public in a provable and targeted manner.

  • Before using SMART 5, a screening using the checklist is recommended to identify the key indicators for the respective company. SMART 5 has been designed to be universally applicable to all industries and applications. The instrument enables the comfortable documentation of the data, which was collected according to the individual sustainability criteria and facilitates its evaluation essentially. Some of the given indicators will not be relevant for an industry or application. As a result, SMART 5 has been working increasingly with selection menus that facilitate setting a focus within the instrument. Therefore, it is possible to display additional input options during processing and state if an indicator is not relevant.

The first target group for SMART 5 are the practitioners in companies that use Chemical Leasing. Due to the variety of topics covered by the indicators, successful integration of data often requires the involvement of different departments or stakeholders.

  • SMART 5 is structured in three sections. The first section contains the description of the instrument and an explanation of the procedure.

The second section comprises the data collection by companies. First, the section contains a sheet for a short characterisation of the company and the documented project. In the five subsequent sheets, information about the sustainability criteria and their respective sub-criteria and indicators is requested. Data entering for each criterion is facilitated by selection (drop-down) menus and possibilities for entering figures or comments.

In the third section, an automatic summary of the inserted data is generated (“factsheet”) that can be exported. This factsheet is the basis for further work with the data. It can only be related to the project profile via an anonymous project short title. The factsheet shows at one glance for which of the five sustainability criteria data is present. This provides a direct feedback to the companies after data entering regarding the status of implementation.
